About the event
Vocal Ensemble Magnificat brings a different sound to the range of passions with the St Mark Passion. This English passion will be heard on Friday 22 March in Dwingeloo and on Saturday 23 March in Emmen.
Composer Charles Wood (1866-1926), with the dean of the impressive chapel of King's College in Cambridge, had the intention of creating a new and fresh sound. A good alternative to Bach's voluminous passions and Stainer's popular Crucifixion. A need that also exists a hundred years later.
In five parts, we follow the suffering and death of Jesus according to Mark, from the last meal to the crucifixion. In it, Wood has incorporated several hymns, such as the ancient Gregorian chant Pange lingua gloriosi.
The virtuoso organ part ratifies the sung texts with changing sound worlds and is played by organist Mattijs de Vreugd. Impressive settings by the choir are interspersed with solo singing by Twan van der Wolde (tenor) and Michiel Nonhebel (bass). The whole event is conducted by conductor Daniel Rouwkema.
IntroductionThe programme begins with a short introduction. Wood's passion will be placed in context and special musical moments will be highlighted. The introduction starts at 20:15.
