Explanation Rachmaninov Vespers

Rachmaninov's monumental Vespers is one of the most beautiful, most impressive a-cappella choral works ever composed. Old Russian Orthodox melodies form the basis. However, the masterpiece found its way not so much into the Russian Orthodox liturgy. The dramatic setting, symphonic scope and great virtuosity make the work very popular on concert stages worldwide.

The piece opens with Priidite, poklonimsya, in which the choir sings a solemn invitation to come together for the evening service. This is followed by a series of parts, including psalms and hymns, each with its own characteristic atmosphere, from joyful and jubilant to introspective and contemplative. Highlights of the work include the sublime Bogoroditse Devo andVelikoye Slavosloviye, which regularly induces a feeling of majestic grandeur.
